What is AI search visibility?
AI search visibility is how often your brand shows up when buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini about your category. What it means and how to measure it.
- AI search visibility is the share of AI answers in your category that mention your brand.
- A mention and a citation are different things: one is your name in the text, the other is a link to a source.
- No visibility number means anything without its sample size, so read every figure as “4 in 10 answers, based on 18 answers”.
- Visibility says whether you appear. Perception says what the answer claims about you once you do.
What AI search visibility means
AI search visibility is how often your brand appears when someone asks an AI engine a question your product answers. If ChatGPT recommends three project management tools and yours is not on the list, you have zero visibility in that answer.
Buyers have moved a share of their research into chat windows. They type a question they would once have typed into Google, and they get one written answer that names a short list. That list is the new shortlist. Appearing in it is what this measurement is about, and it is measured the same way you would measure anything else: ask the question repeatedly, count how often you show up.
Two things get counted. A mention is your brand named in the answer text. A citation is a link to a source page the answer drew from. They move independently. A Perplexity answer can cite your documentation while describing a competitor, or praise you without linking to anything you own.
How it differs from ranking in Google
Ranking in Google puts a page on a results list the reader can scan. AI visibility is about being inside a single written answer that names a few options, often with no click at all.
Consequences follow from that shape. First, there is room for a handful of names instead of ten blue links, so position matters more: the first brand in a list of three gets read differently from the third. Second, the reader may never visit your site, so the classic reward of ranking (traffic) weakens while the value of being described correctly grows. Third, the answer is assembled at question time from sources the engine retrieves, which means the pages other people publish about you (reviews, comparisons, forum threads) shape the answer as much as your own site does.

What a strong visibility number looks like
There is no universal good score. Visibility is the share of answers that mention you, so a strong number is one that is higher than your competitors' in the same answers and moving up over weeks.
Read any single day with suspicion. Answers vary from run to run (see why AI answers change), so a 20% week and a 45% week on the same prompt set can both be noise. That is exactly why every number in advisible carries its sample size, and why estimates are marked est.
How to measure AI search visibility
The method is straightforward: write down the questions your buyers ask, run them on each engine on a schedule, keep every answer, and count mentions, positions and citations over time.
- List buyer questions. The prompts a person would type before buying: category questions, comparison questions, “best X for Y” questions, and a few about your brand directly.
- Run each prompt on each engine every day. Daily runs give you enough answers to average out the variance, and a manual “Run now” helps when you just changed a page.
- Store the original answers. Keep them unedited, so a better parser or a new metric can be applied to history later.
- Parse mentions, position, sentiment and citations out of each answer, then aggregate into daily series you can compare across weeks.
- Report with denominators attached. Every chart should say how many answers it is based on, or a reader will over-read a quiet weekend.
In advisible this loop is the whole product: prompts become daily runs on five engines, every answer lands in the archive with its mentions and citations parsed out, and the overview reports Visibility, Average position, Sentiment and Share of voice, each with “based on N answers” underneath.
Why visibility alone is not enough
Visibility tells you if you were mentioned. It does not tell you whether the answer described you correctly, praised you, or handed the sale to a competitor you outspend.
The same answer that names you can also say you only serve enterprise customers when you sell to small teams, repeat an objection you thought you had retired, or cite a five-year-old review. Those are separate questions with separate measurements: what the answer claims about you (brand perception), whether those claims are true against the facts you register, and which sources fed the answer in the first place.
A practical order of work: get the mention count up first, because nothing else matters if you are absent, then fix what the answers say. The starting points are brand perception in AI answers and fact-checking AI claims against your brand facts.
Common questions
Is AI search visibility the same as GEO?
No. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of improving how you appear in AI answers. AI search visibility is the measurement of where you stand before and after that work.
Which AI engines should I track?
Start with the ones your buyers actually use. For most B2B and consumer brands in English-speaking markets that means ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok and Claude, which is what advisible runs daily.
How many prompts do I need before the number is useful?
Fifteen to twenty-five real buyer questions is a workable start: enough that one lucky answer does not swing the whole report. Add more only when you have a specific question to answer.
Is a citation the same as a mention?
No. A mention is your brand named in the answer text. A citation is a link to a page the answer drew from. An answer can cite you without naming you, or name you without citing you.
GEO vs SEO: what changes and what carries over
GEO optimises how AI engines describe and cite you. SEO optimises ranking. The buyer is the same and much of the work carries over. A side-by-side comparison.
